Education

We can help to equip Young Adult Carers with the skills and confidence to access improved opportunities in education, providing support to make sure Young Adult Carers can break down the barriers to achieving success in their studies. Support will focus on helping carers apply for relevant college and university courses and raising awareness to ensure they receive the appropriate support when they are there.

We can also look to support Young Adult Carers to apply for relevant bursaries and grants to assist with the financial aspects of their studies. The project will link in with local colleges to organise tours for Young Adult Carers.

If you are studying at college there are staff based at campuses throughout Lanarkshire who can provide information and support to student carers. Contact details are below and you can also ask for guidance staff at the relevant college campus reception. Sometimes it helps to have someone to talk to when juggling studies with your caring role:

Employment

Support will look at CV building, interview techniques and raising awareness of YAC issues with local employers. The project will also host training and workshops that will look at helping Young Adult Carers improve their employability skills and enter the world of work.

Small grants are also available to help Young Adult Carers break down the barriers to entering employment. For example, funding towards travel costs, new uniforms and haircuts before interviews (eligibility applies).

As a Young Adult Carer it can be hard to find employment that works around your caring role. Carers Trust have compiled a useful guide for Young Adult Carers who want to get into work. It covers topics such as:

• how to use skills gained from caring in a job application, and
• how to speak to an employer about being a young adult carer
